Pair of carved wooden cherub statues - 18th century, Italian 49½"

SKU: 17682

US$11,150
Dating from the eighteenth century, a charming pair of Italian carved wood cherub statues. Representative of Bacchanalia characters, one cherub holds grapes and the other holds wheat. ("The Bacchanalia" were Roman festivals of Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine). The carved wood bases on which the cherubs stand are decoratively carved and feature a central daisy flower.

Note there is a metal stand fixed to the wood base behind the cherub indicating they may have been floor lamps at one time. Sourced from a private collection in the south of France. A delightful addition to add symmetry and French artisan craft to either side of a fireplace or entry hall. Note the losses as seen in detail photos.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
Approx. overall 49½" high x 14¼" wide x 9¾" deep
Approx. overall 126cm high x 36cm wide x 25cm deep
