This charming small glazed terracotta tureen from the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps dates back to the nineteenth century. It has a lovely red-ocher glaze and a knob handle on its flat lid. Tureens are often used in France as serving dishes for foods such as soups, cassoulet (stews), gratins or classic ratatouille.
Its shape is characterized as a deep oval vessel with fixed ear handles on either side and a cover with a knob to lift open. This petit tureen would be a delightful piece to add to a collection of antique French pottery.
